The Secret to Motivation: Link Your Health to Something Bigger
By Dr. Shawna Darou, ND – Health Philosophy
What if Your Goal Needed Your Health?
What if you set a goal for your life, and then needed to level up your health to reach it?
Do you have a big dream or goal right now—outside of your health, outside of losing weight, sleeping better, or feeling less achy? What’s your big vision for the next year, or the next five years? Is there something you’re preparing yourself for?
Sometimes the most powerful motivation to take care of your body comes when you need your body and mind to perform at their best for something deeply meaningful. Instead of self-care being about willpower, it becomes about alignment—every choice around food, movement, sleep, and mindset serves your bigger vision.
My Personal Example
Here’s an example from my own life. In 2022, I was on the verge of big life changes. I had clarity about what I wanted but fear about following through. At the same time, I made a parallel commitment: to run the Boston Marathon for my 50th birthday. This was no small feat. Qualifying alone was a massive stretch!
To reach that goal, I had to elevate every aspect of my health:
Hired a running coach
Saw a sports dietitian to master endurance fueling
Booked regular physiotherapy and osteopath appointments to stay injury-free
Worked with a therapist to support the personal transformation I was stepping into
I was determined to arrive at my 50th birthday in peak mental, emotional, and physical condition. That vision made the daily choices effortless. Junk food wasn’t tempting, because my body needed fuel. Late nights weren’t an option, because sleep was non-negotiable. Alcohol was off the table, because recovery was everything. My goal gave every act of self-care a higher purpose.

Using This Principle Today
I still use this principle—just on smaller scales. Right now, I’m training for a fast 5k and racing in the Ontario 5k championships next month. I have a coach, a plan, and a stretch time goal. Every workout, rest day, yoga session, and strength workout has meaning, because it connects directly to that goal. Eating well and moving daily isn’t about discipline—it’s about redefining what’s possible for me.

Motivation Beyond Athletics
This approach doesn’t only apply to athletic goals. You might be preparing for something that requires stamina, clarity, and presence, such as:
Launching a new business or creative project
Preparing to step into a leadership role at work
Planning adventures like hiking trips or traveling with ease and energy
Wanting the vitality to fully enjoy your children, grandchildren, or aging parents
Creating resilience to move through a major life transition with strength and grace
When you link your health practices to a bigger dream, you stop asking “how do I stay motivated?” and instead live in alignment with where you’re going.
Your Challenge
Set yourself a big, bold goal this year. Then reverse-engineer your health, vitality, mental clarity, and energy to rise to meet it. Self-care won’t feel like a chore anymore—it will feel like the foundation of the life you’re building.

Absolutely! It applies to career ambitions, family responsibilities, creative projects, and life transitions.
